How three years of CrossFit in North Canton changed everything for Darius Meraj.
Darius Meraj will tell you he was scared.
Not terrified. Not running-from-something scared. Just the regular kind of nervous that shows up when you’re about to do something new and you’re not totally sure it’s going to work out for you.
He’d turned 40. He’d noticed the muscle wasn’t holding on the way it used to. He wanted to get ahead of it — and CrossFit seemed like the right move. But CrossFit had a reputation. Aggressive. Injury-prone. Not exactly “come as you are.” He walked into RTC Fitness — one of the most welcoming CrossFit gyms in North Canton, Ohio — anyway.
Darius shares his story in his own words — from walking in nervous to showing up at 5:30am every morning.
Here’s what he found: a gym that was clean and organized. Coaches who actually paid attention. People who weren’t competing with each other — they were just showing up, doing the work, and cheering each other on.
“It was a no brainer,” he says. And he’s been coming to RTC Fitness ever since.
Three years in, Darius is what you’d call a regular. The 5:30am CrossFit class kind of regular. The “seeing my friend keeps me coming” kind of regular. The kind of person who’s quietly become part of the fabric of this North Canton community without making a big deal of it.
“There is nothing better than getting up at 5am and showing up — and having somebody keeping you accountable.”
Along the way, something else happened that Darius hadn’t necessarily signed up for: his lower back pain went away.
It’s the kind of thing that sneaks up on you in your 40s — a dull ache that becomes background noise, something you stop expecting to fix. A lot of people assume that’s just the cost of getting older. But consistent CrossFit training, good coaching, and actually listening to his coaches at RTC Fitness made the difference. Proper movement patterns, core strengthening, and showing up regularly did what years of ignoring it couldn’t. He doesn’t have that problem anymore.
That’s something worth saying out loud for anyone who’s been told CrossFit is too hard on the body. At RTC Fitness, the coaching is intentional. Movements are taught properly, scaling is always an option, and nobody is pushed past what their body is ready for. CrossFit North Canton doesn’t have to mean high risk — it means high attention to how you move, every single class. And for Darius, that made all the difference.
He will also tell you, with a laugh, that rope climbs are still not his favorite. And that working out alongside the coaches is “a little intimidating.” But he shows up for those too.
When we asked Darius what he’d say to someone sitting on the fence — maybe a little skeptical, a little nervous, not sure if CrossFit is actually for someone like them — he didn’t hesitate.
“Don’t be intimidated. People want you to be successful here. So don’t be afraid. Give it a try.”
That’s the thing about RTC Fitness in North Canton. Nobody walks in already great at this. They just walk in. The coaches handle the rest.
And if you ask Darius to describe the gym in one word?
“Excellence.”
We’ll take it, Darius. Three years of early mornings, three years of showing up, three years of proving that CrossFit is for everyone. We’re glad you walked in. 🧡
